What is dental sedation?

Sedation is a method of anesthesia commonly used in dentistry to reduce patient anxiety and treat patients with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy. During sedation, patients are in a semi-awake state and can communicate with the dentist. However, patients do not remember the dental procedure afterwards.

There are 3 methods for treating a patient under sedation.

1- Oral Sedation:

Oral sedation is a needle-free sedation method. It works by taking the prescribed dose of sedative medication before starting the dental procedure. The medication can take 40 minutes to 1 hour to take effect. Therefore, patients should arrive at the clinic 1 hour before their normal appointment time and wait until the sedative medication begins to take effect.

Patients are conscious during oral sedation. However, they are not fully aware of what is happening in the room. Unlike Intravenous Sedation, it is not possible to control and eliminate the effects of the pills.

2- Intravenous Sedation

Intravenous sedation is achieved by injecting sedative drugs into the vascular circulation through a cannula. The effects of IV sedation begin within seconds after the sedative drugs are injected and the procedure can be easily managed by anesthetic specialists. Patients are conscious, but not fully aware of what is happening in the operating room.

IV sedation can be ended at any time by giving some other medication if the patient needs it. It only takes a few minutes for the effects of sedation to wear off. However, patients should be observed even after the sedation has ended. At Vivyan Dental Clinic, after completing treatment under sedation, we take patients to the observation room to sleep for a few hours.

3- Inhalation Sedation (Nitrous Oxide, Smile Gas)

Inhalation sedation is the mildest form of sedation, achieved by inhaling gas through a mask during the dental procedure. The gas we use in dentistry in Turkey is the same gas used by pregnant women during childbirth. The gas makes the procedure very relaxing and dramatically reduces anxiety levels. The effects of nitrogen oxide disappear quickly after the procedure without requiring any additional action by the doctor/anesthetic specialist. Patients are conscious during the inhalation gas sedation procedure and are more aware of what is happening around them than with other methods.

How is sedation performed at Vivyan Dental Clinic?

All sedation methods are available at Vivyan Dental Clinic and are performed only by specialists. Our anesthesiologist is an expert in the field. He carefully reviews the medical history of each patient to see if there are any risks involved in proceeding with sedation.

We regularly perform a combination of oral sedation and IV sedation. Patients receive a low dose of oral sedative 30-40 minutes before starting IV sedation and the dental procedure begins.

A detailed medical (allergies, systemic diseases, medications, etc.) and social (Medications, Smoking, Alcohol, etc.) history of the patient will prevent any complications for the sedation procedure. Therefore, we obtain this important information from all our patients in confidence.
