What is Digital Smile Design?

Digital smile design is the presentation of the final version of the smile to the person without any treatment on the teeth before starting the treatment. Today, when dentistry is no longer just about treatments, it is the renewal of a personalized ideal smile by applying medicine and art together. It can be summarized as the planning of a healthy, ideal smile by combining modern dentist technologies with the personal wishes of patients, health and naturalness.

Where to Start with Smile Design?

• Smile design starts with taking detailed photos and videos from many angles.
• The upper and lower jaw measurements of the person are taken and models are obtained.
• Various measurements and drawings are made on these images and models in digital environment and the most suitable smile is designed for the patient’s facial structure.
• This designed smile is transferred to the laboratory technician and a Mock Up study is made where you can see the final form of your teeth. The final stage is shown to you in the mouth before your teeth are cut. If the result is liked, dental procedures are started for the planned treatment.

What are the Measurement Criteria in Digital Smile Design?

When making Digital Smile Design, your facial proportions and symmetries are important for planning and should be planned very carefully.

• • Horizontal Alignment: The line passing through the pupils and the line passing through the middle of the teeth parallel to each other can be defined as the ideal smile. Since the incompatibility in the shape and size of the front incisors can be easily seen, it is very important that it is not asymmetrical. When evaluated from this point of view, eliminating the symmetrical disorder to the extent possible by the facial features adds an extra charm to the smile.

• • Gum Line: Your gum line should be parallel to the upper lip line when you smile. The gum line that adds meaning to your smile is just like the frame surrounding a beautiful painting.

• • Smile Width: It should be ensured that the teeth behind the smile line appear in certain proportions, if this is not achieved, the dark areas in the corners of the mouth will not create a pleasant appearance. Smile width is one of the most basic criteria for an aesthetic smile.

• • Embrasures The areas called embryos are the natural, triangular spaces between the ends of the teeth. The size of the embryos increases from the front teeth to the back teeth, providing an aesthetic and ideal smile.

• • Golden Ratios: In dentistry, the golden ratio is a mathematical theory about the proportions of the dental array. In order to achieve facial harmony, the entire anterior tooth composition should be considered as a whole picture and the other parameters of the facial structure should form the frame of this picture. The width and height of the upper incisors in the visible area should be 1/16 of the width and height of the face, respectively. Also, there is a ratio known as the number pi (=1.618…) between a number of geometric shapes in nature. For an aesthetic smile, the teeth should also follow this rule. For example, the ratio between the widths of the front incisors and the side incisors (1.618/1=1.618…=pi number), the ratio between the widths of the canines and the side incisors (0.618/1=0.618, which is equal to the result obtained by dividing the number pi by one or the number obtained by subtracting 1 from the number pi. 1/pi = pi-1).
  • Tooth Ratio: The ratios of the widths of the front two teeth to their heights should also comply with the golden ratio, i.e. 0.618/1 = 0.618, which is equal to the result obtained by dividing 1 by the number pi. The visible length of the tooth should always be greater than its width.

How long does it take to have a digital smile design?

Digital Smile Design consists of two sessions. It takes approximately 3-4 days.

• In the first session, photographs and models are obtained. This process takes approximately 30 minutes-60 minutes.
• At the end of 3-4 days, our smile design will be completed in your second appointment session, your doctor will explain your design practically in the mouth. The changes and requests you want to be made are discussed mutually and evaluated on the design. The necessary changes are applied on the design. The final decision is made. This session takes approximately 1 hour.

What is done in the rehearsal phase?

In the rehearsal stage, your doctor transfers the smile design, which is specially designed for you on the model, into the mouth within approximately 5-10 minutes. At this stage, there is absolutely no abrasion on the teeth, etc. There is no process.

In line with your wishes, your doctor determines the ideal smile for you and can apply the changes he deems necessary on the design. After the changes are clarified, studio shots are taken again and the final version of the smile design is evaluated.

Can we make changes during the rehearsal session?

Of course. The main purpose of the rehearsal session is to examine the design with you in the mouth and for you to like and accept that design. Everything you want to change is evaluated in detail in that session.

How long will it take to build my new teeth if I like the digital smile design?

The treatment is started in line with the treatment selection recommended by your dentist and your teeth will be ready after an average of 1 week for each treatment.

What should be considered in smile design?

In smile design, it is very important to determine the patient’s wishes by mutual consultation between the patient and the physician in terms of the outcome of the treatment. After the wishes of the person are thoroughly determined, some criteria should be considered in order to make the ideal smile design for him:

Smile design starts by first determining the geometric shape of the patient’s face. The facial features of the person contain the signs of the form in which the teeth should be selected.

Male and female anatomy are quite different from each other. While facial features are sharper and more distinct in men, the proportion of forehead, nose, chin tip differs from the female face. In women, the transitions are softer nose and eyebrow arches are more faint.
